As digital health tools become increasingly important in public health, Dr. Javiera Monardez Popelka is leading the way in integrating technology with family-focused prevention programs. Her work with Padres Informados, Jóvenes Preparados (PIJP) exemplifies how mobile applications and web platforms can support parents, caregivers, and educators in fostering positive child development and family wellness.
Dr. Monardez Popelka played a pivotal role in designing the PIJP website, co-developing the train-the-trainer model, and contributing to the creation of the PIJP and Padres Preparados Jóvenes Saludables mobile apps. She conducted in-depth stakeholder interviews with over 30 community members, gathering insights to ensure program materials were both culturally relevant and practical.
Jennifer Doty, PhD, from the University of Oregon, describes Dr. Monardez Popelka as “passionate, innovative, and highly organized,” noting her ability to translate research into tools that genuinely meet community needs. Most recently, her work in culturally adapting the Family Check-Up Online program for Latinx families demonstrates her commitment to accessibility. By working closely with bilingual, bicultural community members and a community advisory board, Dr. Monardez Popelka ensures the program reflects authentic parenting practices, promotes adoption, and enhances family engagement.
